PeopleTools 8.55 – The Sunset of Crystal Reports and Enhancements to BI Publisher

Sunset Crystal Reports Enhancement of BI Publisher

For several years, Oracle has been indicating that Crystal Reports was a technology of the past and has encouraged customers to take advantage of BI Publisher. Well that day has come! PeopleTools 8.55 will not support the use of Crystal Reports. Don’t be alarmed, the capabilities now available to you will make you wish you never had a three-ring binder full of static, stale, snapshot reports. The tools (Pivot Grids, Simplified Analytics) that will replace many of your old reports will provide you with fresh, actionable data to make better decisions to run your business. For those situations where you need static data, month-end for example, BI Publisher is your tool of choice.

Here are some of the new features that Oracle has built into BI Publisher in PeopleTools 8.55.

  • PeopleTools has created a BI Publisher report user role (XMLP Report User) that allows users to schedule and run reports. Users with this role can also open a majority of BI Publisher report definitions in read-only mode.
  • Report developers can delete report definitions from the results grid of the report definition search page.
  • PeopleTools delivers a copy report definition page that simplifies report development by enabling report developers to copy report definitions.
  • BI Publisher for PeopleSoft now enables you to develop PDF reports that users can edit and then submit the changes to be saved in a database. The submittable PDF report functionality is available for delivered self-service reports and for customer-created reports.
  • Beginning in PeopleTools 8.55 you can change the data source of an existing report definition. When a user clicks the link the data source type and data source ID field become editable. An option to cancel data source changes is available, allowing a report developer to revert back to initial state.
  • PeopleTools enables you to include attachments from external sources with BI Publisher PDF report output. The source attachments are converted to PDF format and then merged with the main report. The report is then displayed to the end users or delivered to report manager. To convert attachments to PDF output, BI Publisher utilizes Oracle’s Outside In Technology (OIT), a product that enables the transformation and control of more than 600 file formats, including documents from office suites, specialty formats, and legacy files.
  • You can distribute reports using email to recipients that do not have PeopleSoft user profiles. This feature enables you to distribute BI Publisher reports to external users whose email addresses are stored in the database, file server, or other location.

Oracle Lifetime Support

If you’re a PeopleSoft customer, you’ve probably run into a bug, or an “unintended feature” of your products and have had to work with Oracle Support to resolve the issue.  You’ve also probably wondered just what is covered by support and for how long. The Oracle Lifetime Support Policy is simple, predictable and flexible. It helps your entire Oracle technology environment stay current and functioning as designed. From database to middleware to applications and hardware, the benefits of the industry’s most comprehensive support coverage are yours as a PeopleSoft customer.

Oracle support comes in three levels:

  1. Premier: This support provides you with maintenance and support of your Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle|PeopleSoft Applications for five years from their general availability date.
  2. Extended: This support allows you to be in control of your Database, Middleware, and Applications upgrade strategy by providing additional maintenance and upgrades for Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Applications at an additional cost to your organization.
  3. Sustaining: This support provides maintenance for as long as you use your Oracle|PeopleSoft software. This will include access to Oracle online support tools, upgrade rights, pre-existing fixes and assistance from technical support experts.

Here’s how the current support schedule plays out. If you are a PeopleSoft Financials customer already on 9.2, your Premier support will run through December of 2024, with the availability of Extended support through December of 2027. However if you still haven’t upgraded (what are you waiting for?) Premier support of your 9.1 PeopleSoft Financial software has expired, and Extended support is only available to you through January 2018.

PeopleSoft Interaction Hub – Selective Adoption

Interaction Hub is Now Using the Selective Adoption Process!

In case you are not aware, as of June of 2015, the PeopleSoft Interaction Hub is now providing updates via the selective adoption process. Customers can take advantage of selective adoption from the Interaction Hub in the same fashion as the PeopleSoft applications.

As with the applications, there are minimal requirements for both the Tools and Interaction Hub versions that customers must be live on in order to take advantage of selective adoption. In order to help customers understand the minimum requirements, Oracle has posted a white paper, “PeopleSoft Interaction Hub is Moving to Selective Adoption” on My Oracle Support. Customers can download the white paper here with your Oracle Support account information.

Also found through My Oracle Support is an Interaction Hub PUM homepage. The release schedule of images are not as frequent as the application images, but for planning purposes they are posted on the homepage. The latest release dates are as follows:

  • Image 2: February 8, 2016
  • Image 3: August 8, 2016
  • Image 4: December 19, 2016

But always be sure to check the homepage for the latest dates.

Follow these instructions to access the Interaction Hub PUM homepage: go to the PeopleSoft Update Manager home page on MOS, then select the PeopleSoft Update Image Home Pages tab, and choose the Interaction Hub Update Image Page. Remember, you will need your user name and password to enter.

It’s More Than Just a Series of Mini-Upgrades!

PeopleSoft Selective Adoption will be a hot topic at the upcoming Oracle OpenWorld conference in San Francisco from October 25th-October 29th. While a significant number of customers have moved to PeopleSoft 9.2, a lot of them are still struggling to define their strategy for Selective Adoption. Many of the customers I’ve spoken with have not applied an image since completing the upgrade and their strategy going forward is to move to the latest image every year or two.   The reason? They feel their end-users are too busy to evaluate the new features and functionality delivered in an image. The problem? Customers are missing out on one of the most significant changes in Oracle’s delivery model – the ability to introduce new features and functionality into your business processes faster and more efficiently than in the past. With Selective Adoption, customers now have the ability to pick and choose new enhancements that can significantly add business value without having to wait on the next major release or an upgrade of the entire system. The customers who take the time to understand this delivery model, are willing to embrace it, and align their organization to adopt the change will be the ones to achieve the maximum benefit from their software investment.

Oracle, recognizing the demand from a tech-savvy market and determined to meet that demand, has been providing more and more FLUID pages with the release of PeopleSoft 9.2 and Tools 8.54. These pages are designed to provide the mobile experience end-users are looking for. Here is a brief overview of the FLUID pages provided on the FSCM side.

The FLUID Homepage presents the key tiles that are available for Employee Self Service on mobile devices. Employees can see their Expenses, Requisitions, Maintenance Service Requests, Travel Authorizations, Time Entry and Status Reports for any projects they are assigned in PeopleSoft.

Once the user moves to the Expense page, they will have the ability to Create Expense Reports, look at Expense History, view Unsubmitted Reports and Reports Awaiting Approval, as well as their current Wallet Transactions.

As you can see, drilling into each tile provides deeper functionality designed for the mobile device.

From the FLUID Homepage users can easily navigate, on their mobile device, to the other various FLUID offerings of deeper functionality for Procurement Operations, Project Management and Cash Management.

It’s clear to see on the Procurement Operations Homepage, Procurement Specialists will have mobile access to key activities associated with their job function such as Expiring Contracts, Approval Cycle Times, Procurement Spend Analysis, etc.

Oracle Announces
PeopleSoft Roadmap Site

Oracle has now provided the PeopleSoft community with a comprehensive information center that provides a high-level view of planned new features and enhancements for the PeopleSoft product line that are scheduled to be delivered through PeopleSoft Update Images within the next 12 to 18 months. By creating this site, Oracle is providing unprecedented access to their direction with the PeopleSoft product, allowing for PeopleSoft customers to better develop their PeopleSoft adoption strategy.

Each PeopleSoft pillar, Technology, Human Capital Management, Financials, Supply Chain, Asset Lifecycle Management, and Campus Solutions, has a designated page highlighting the planned features and enhancements.  As each enhancement is delivered within the appropriate PeopleSoft pillar, it will be removed from the high level site and added to the Cumulative Feature Overview tool and new features planned for the subsequent Update Images will be added to the site. In other words, this site will be continuously updated to reflect the latest upcoming planned new features and enhancements.

PeopleSoft HCM Updates for the Affordable Care Act
